[Gut Talk #04] Xiaochang's Back / A Sincere Apology / Taking the First Step to Host a Paid Workshop

✍️ Last Updated: October 21, 2025

Hi Xiaochang, long time no letter! If you're seeing this, it means you've subscribed to Gut Talk Newsletter or registered using my Heptabase link! (At the end of this article, there's a 35% discount for the 'Effective Input ∞ Rapid Output' workshop—only available for 2 days!)

🙏 I want to say "I'm sorry 😭" first

I really haven't written a newsletter in forever, sniff sniff. I remember back in May and June when I desperately wanted to go full-time with my personal brand, so I forced myself to post daily (FB, Threads, IG), publish the newsletter weekly, and write articles monthly. I started with full enthusiasm and got decent early results. But then! Another brand I had been running "Life Exit Event", a business partner (who was once my life mentor) proposed collaborating with me to run it. At that time, he was truly sincere, painting me a huge picture that made me decide: "Alright, I'm willing to properly co-run Life Exit Gathering with him".

So I swayed like grass in the wind, but ended up hitting my head the entire way—tragedy struck. Because all along he had been commanding me from above, and I only started that brand because of him. I never properly thought about "Why do I want to start a business?" That inner drive to manage the brand simply vanished completely during the collaboration …

But now that the brand has stopped collaborating with him and I've healed for a while, I actually started writing articles on my own initiative? I even have my own ideas constantly emerging about Life Exit Gathering's brand planning! This reminds me of what the author mentioned in "The Almanack of Naval Ravikant," which I discussed in an online book talk last night: "Passion usually stems from your talents and curiosity.」、「Things you're passionate about keep you invested, and you enjoy them tirelessly even without external rewards.

I think what I truly want to do at heart is managing my personal brand, consistently creating content, teaching my followers practical methods, and introducing amazing people to other amazing people (with me as the bridge). I'd enjoy it even without making money.

Though I envy those who figured out their life goals and passions early, honestly, we also quite enjoy "being on the journey of searching for that kind of determination," don't we? It feels like touching and exploring the world playfully everywhere.

🤔 What level of learning reflection won't be criticized for falling flat?

Many creator friends have encountered the same problem. We're probably all hardcore writers—we can barely write anything that isn't helpful to readers (like pure chicken soup). So when we write reflections on talks or online courses, we almost always go extremely detailed. But this has a problem: if organizers feel you've publicly exposed all their trade secrets online, what products will they sell?

After discussing with friends and consulting a communication expert,Teacher Zhang Wangxing, the teacher told us three conclusions:

#1 Don't write class notes—write what you feel inside

For example, if the teacher in class said: "The three things you most need to pay attention to when writing articles are.." , we can write in our reflection: "Ionly discovered after the class that writing articles actually requires …」。

This way we directly avoid the key techniques mentioned in class while still effectively outputting what we learned (I'm still adapting to this reflection method..).

#2 Not the teacher's golden quotes, but what I discovered

For example, if the teacher in class said: "Set priorities and focus on what matters most. (a certain golden quote)" , we can write in our reflection: "The teacher shared something I really resonated with, and I also discovered in my own life …」。

You must mention that it was the teacher who said it, and share your own actual feelings about that quote.

#3 Not the teacher's process, but my actions

For example, if the teacher used method OOO during the course to heighten the atmosphere, we can write in our reflection: "Through an activity in the teacher's class, I thought about what I could do in my future …」。

Teacher Zhang Wangxing said: "In simple terms, it's about avoiding writing just 'facts' and transforming them into 'feelings,' 'discoveries,' and 'future actions'."

I have to frantically keep attributing this series of suggestions to Teacher Wangxing and making clear they're not my own insights. In writing, you really need to be careful about this to avoid causing trouble.

🌭 I'm finally hosting a talk for myself! 12/4 19:30 《Effective Input ∞ Rapid Output》Realize Your Post-Work Creative Dreams with AI

This year I've given free talks for many organizations (at least 10 times), and recently many students have DMed me with long lists of questions. I've also replied with tons of answers and feedback. I feel like I finally have the confidence to host my first paid online talk!

People who follow my IG know that recently I was invited by the Life Ah Podcast channel (with 30K+ followers) to share the most serious issue in my life: "Inferiority Complex". Actually, I had wanted to host this talk for myself half a year ago, but kept procrastinating. I kept wondering: am I really someone with expertise? Can my thoughts, ideas, and learning really help all of you? Various pressures and impostor syndrome kicked in, and I moved rocks that ended up blocking my own path.

But this time it's different. Let me get serious. I designed a month-long marketing timeline, a super comprehensive pre-course survey, and even negotiated with Heptabase officially to offer30 days of free trial for new usersas a benefit (normally it's only 7 days!!)
